In September 2020, what I expected to be a routine mammogram changed my life—I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Two months later, I underwent surgery and received exceptional care from the Gayle and Tom Benson Cancer Center and Ochsner Hospital.​

Today, I proudly call myself a breast cancer survivor. That experience has given me a deeper purpose: supporting women facing the same fight and reminding them they are not alone.

My story is also a testament to the importance of early detection. My cancer was discovered because I had my regularly scheduled mammogram on time, and that decision made all the difference. I now use my experience to encourage women to prioritize their screenings and their health because early detection saves lives!

Family is at the heart of this mission. Our logo was lovingly created by my granddaughter, Charli, making it more than a symbol—it represents love, hope, family, and the legacy I hope to leave for generations to come. January 2027 will mark my fiftieth year of marriage to Calvin C. Chapman, Sr., which has been a true testament to partnership, resilience, and loyalty.

This journey ultimately brought together two things I love deeply: helping people and cooking gumbo. Through Sylvia’s Gumbo, my personal experience has become a community mission to raise breast cancer awareness, encourage early detection, uplift survivors, honor those we carry in our hearts, and support women still fighting.

For me, it’s more than gumbo—it’s family, community, survival, and giving hope to someone who may need it today.
